Islamabad Zoo, a death row for animals.
Peshawar: The
zoo has become a death valley for the animals, as
two leopards and two zebras died during the
last year died while after the death of two crocodiles
and so many other
animals now we have lost the 22 years old female elephant due to the negligence
of Islamabad Zoo authorities. The elephant has been gifted by the Sir Lankan
Government in 1991 when she was just one year old.
The female elephant of
the zoo was found dead on early morning of Sunday in its enclosure. All the
Marghzar Zoo officers reached the elephant’s enclosure and the zoos veterinary
officer examined the animal and declared that the animal had expired. The
female elephant was suffering from an injury in one of its legs but this may
not be considered as a reason behind its death. Some of the reports
suggest that the elephant was poisoned.
“Our host, our friend,
our ‘saheli’ in the Murghzar zoo of Islamabad passed away. She was a 22 years
old elephant when the average age for an elephant is 60 to 70 and sometimes it
goes upto 90 to 110 years.I have been taking my children to the Islamabad zoo
every year for last ten years and ‘saheli’ was always there to welcome us.
Saheli, the gentle giant, our children loved to meet, Kaavan (male elephant)
stayed inside but she made sure to greet all visitors with a smile at the
entrance of her house. The source of charm and attraction for kids has been
faded out to oblivion.” Said a visitor in the Zoo.

ReplyDeleteThis elephant needs to be sent to a sanctuary with other elephants. This poor creature does not deserve this life.
ReplyDeleteDisgusting and cruel!
ReplyDeleteUntil there are laws to protect zoo animals this will continue happening in Pakistan, which is one of the few countries not to have such laws. Zoos can literally get away with Gross Negligence and murder. And they have just announced that they plan to bring another elephant from Sri Lanka to Islamabad zoo to accompany Kaavan in his tragic existence (one cannot call it a life), this when so many people in Pakistan and around the world want Kaavan to leave this zoo and go to a sanctuary, where he can be professionally cared for, learn to be an elephant, and live out his days as such. The zoo has no right to him if they cannot take care of him properly. These animals are not disposable toys, they are sentient.
